Ioby, which means “in our backyards,” serves as an alternative to NIMBY (or “not in my backyard”). It aims to be a “crowd-resourcing” platform that directly connects individuals to community-led, neighbor-funded environmental projects in their neighborhoods. Crowd-resourcing combines crowd-funding, or pooling small donations, with resource organizing, the ability to organize capital (including cash, in kind donations, volunteer time, and advocacy). Since 2008, Ioby has pooled more than $500,000 and has successfully funded 218 projects across the country that address clean air and water, climate change, public health and open space.
