This study from the National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC) assesses gentrification and displacement between 2000 and 2017. Researchers found that more than 135,000 residents have been displaced due to rising property values, and that seven cities accounted for nearly half of the gentrification experienced nationally. The report includes in-depth profiles of some of these rapidly gentrifying cities, including Philadelphia, Portland, Richmond, and Washington, DC. The report echoes some of the findings in our own 2018 study, Community Control of Land and Housing, in its recommendations for revitalization without displacement through strategies like limited equity co-ops, community land trusts, and tenant right of first refusal policies.
