Crossroads Community Food Network

Crossroads Community Food Network works to improve access to fresh, local, healthy food through programs and models mutually supportive of community residents and growers. In 2007, the nonprofit launched Crossroads Farmers Market, which sells food from local vendors to residents of Maryland’s Takoma/Langley Crossroads, a diverse, largely immigrant area.  The Market was the first in the country to incentivize the purchase of local produce for people using federal nutrition benefits by matching the amount spent at the Market up to $15.  As of 2015, the program distributed over $300,000 in benefits to over 8,000 area low-income individuals and was replicated by more than 500 farmers markets across the country.  To better support unemployed and underemployed area residents, the nonprofit is now working to start a shared-use, commercial kitchen space for low-income micro-entrepreneurs and a Microenterprise Training Program, which will work with low-income Takoma Park residents to develop a small-scale food business.
