Animating a Community Sustaining Economy
Posted by:
John Duda

Position: Video Animation/Nonprofit Design Internship (Paid)

Duration: 12 Weeks, 20 hrs/week, starting June 1st

Compensation: $12/hr (as an independent contractor)

The Democracy Collaborative, based in Takoma Park, Maryland and Cleveland, Ohio, is a research institute dedicated to developing concrete and innovative strategies for democratizing wealth and sustaining communities. Our flagship initiative, the Evergreen Cooperatives network in Cleveland, combines green job creation with worker-owned businesses to create a more sustainable city while lifting up economically marginalized communities. More information about our work can be found at http://community-wealth.org.

Candidates for this position should have a proven ability to design and produce short animations, as well as an interest in communicating effectively around issues surrounding economic inequality and community-based alternatives. Over the course of a 12-week period, the Intern will work closely with our Communications Coordinator to conceptualize, script, design, and produce three 2-5 minute animated features which explain and explore aspects of our models for transformative community wealth building. We anticipate that the Intern will gain valuable experience helping a small, engaged non-profit creatively translate its ideas to film, and hope that the finished products will provide a useful addition to the Intern’s portfolio.

Qualifications: We’re not committed to any particular technique or style of animation, as long as the end result is pedagogically useful and broadly appealing. We would expect the Intern to not only be technically proficient, but to be in a position to help drive the creative process. Ideally, the Intern would also be genuinely interested in community-focused economic development and emerging alternatives to the economic status quo.

We anticipate that the Intern will be available to meet for 2-3 hours a week either in Baltimore between 9 and 5 on Fridays or in Takoma Park on Monday-Thursday. We expect that the actual animation work would be done with the Intern’s own equipment.

How to apply: Please submit a cover letter and résumé, including samples of previous animation work, to jduda@democracycollaborative.org. To receive full consideration, please submit applications by April 15th, 2014. Applications may be considered until the position is filled.
