Kaiser Permanente

Headquartered in Oakland, Kaiser Permanente, a nonprofit health insurance company that also operates 38 hospitals, is one of the first health systems in the country that recognized the benefits of adopting more sustainable practices.  Kaiser ranks first in solar use among all U.S. health delivery systems, and the organization’s reliance on renewable energy sources is credited with saving 65,600 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions in 2013.  Kaiser was a founding member of the California FreshWorks fund, investing $1 million to seed what has become a $264 million private-public partnership focused on increasing the supply of fresh food in low-income areas.  In 2013, the system spent $1.9 billion on community-focused initiatives, which includes grants totaling $173 million made to nearly 2,000 community groups.
