Established in 1997 to address neighborhood disinvestment, University City District (UCD) is a partnership between Philadelphia’s University City neighborhood anchor institutions, small businesses, and residents focused on improving public spaces, addressing crime and public safety issues, boosting commercial corridors, connecting low-income residents to careers, and promoting job growth and innovation. In 2017, UCD’s programs were credited with supporting $3 million in property renovations and connecting 157 unemployed residents to area jobs. Aiming to create new employment opportunities and help beautify the district, in 2016 UCD launched the social enterprise, Green City Works, which now employs a crew of 10 who maintain over 1.5 million square feet of green space.
