Illinois Governor's Task Force Moves Forward with Community Wealth Building

Democracy Collaborative contributions highlighted

In April of 2013, Democracy Collaborative Executive Director Ted Howard was invited by the Governor's Task Force on Social Innovation, Enterpreneurship, and Enterprise to present our recommendations for low-cost, high return policies that could build community wealth across the state of Illinois.  (You can read this "Action Agenda" document here.) We're happy to report that a number of our suggestions have been incorporated into the Task Force's new report to the Governor and General Assembly.

Mt Rainier Bike Co-op

MRBC aims to enable and encourage people to own, maintain, and ride bicycles safely. We reclaim, refurbish, and redistribute used bicycles that would otherwise be heading for the landfill, We teach mechanics to youth and adults, and we partner with local DC area organizations to promote an inclusive and responsible bicycling community. Greenbelt Nursery Schools

The Greenbelt Nursery School is a cooperative school for young children from Greenbelt and the surrounding communities. The cooperative nature of the School provides parents with a unique opportunity to participate in their children's first educational experience.

Gan Shalom Preschool

A teacher-led, parent-run Jewish Education Program, Gan Shalom Cooperative Jewish Preschool on the Hill opened its doors at 118 Tenth Street NE in September, 2010 with an inaugural class of eight students (see photo).  We have since added more classes and we're opening a second campus.

Capitol Hill Cooperative Playschool

Capitol Hill Cooperative Playschool is a cooperative, wholly parent staffed playschool for Capitol Hill 2 year olds. CHCPS is non-denominational.
