Equal Exchange

Founded in 1986 and owned and governed by 85 worker-owners, this for-profit Fair Trade coffee, tea and chocolate company is a worker-co-operative dedicated to partnering with farmer and consumer co-operatives as much as possible. It currently works with 40 small-scale farmer co-ops in 20 countries. A major portion of its $30 million in annual sales (2007) flow through hundreds of consumed-owned food co-operatives and non-profit Fair Trade shops nationwide. Read more about Equal Exchange...

The Energy Cooperative

Started in 1979 as a spin off from Weavers Way Food Co-op, The Energy Co-op has expanded over the years to become a provider of renewable electricity, including solar, wind, hydropower, bio-mass, and bio-diesel.  The cooperative has a three-fold mission:  1) to provide energy cost savings, education, and advocacy on behalf of members; 2) to promote the efficient use of energy and the use of renewable energy; and 3) to support cooperative concepts and participate in the cooperative movement. As of 2016, the cooperative had nearly 6,000 members and $3.7 million in total revenues.

CHS, Inc.

Created in 1998 through the merger of Cenex and Harvest States, two agricultural co-ops whose roots go back to the period of the Great Depression, CHS is the country's largest grain cooperative, with $17.2 billion in sales in 2007. Childspace Cooperative Development, Inc.

Working to improve the quality of traditionally low-paid child care workers, Childspace CDI hopes to improve not only workplace conditions but also the care received by children. Childspace CDI, in partnership with worker-owned child care centers, is addressing the issue with a three step strategy – empowering workers; improving financial operations to free up additional resources; and encouraging these workers to advocate for additional subsidies and health insurance. Agri-Mark

This Northeastern co-op, owned by 1,450 dairy farmer families, was founded in 1917. It is best known for two of its labels, Cabot Creamery of Vermont and McCadam Cheese of New York. In 2002, the co-op had $550 million in sales and returned $6.8 million in patronage rebates to its members, working out to about $5,000 for a dairy farmer with 100 cows. Read more about Agri-Mark...

Restaurant Opportunities Center - New York (Manhattan)

ROC-NY aims to develop worker-owned cooperative restaurants dedicated to food quality, service excellence and employee welfare. Its first restaurant, COLORS, opened for business in January 2006 and has approximately 50 employee-owners. The group ultimately hopes to extend the model of employee ownership to other restaurant ventures within the United States, integrating support for sustainable agriculture and local producers as key business principles. The Film-Makers' Cooperative

As the largest archive and distributor of independent and avant-garde films in the world, the Film-Makers' Cooperative was formed in 1962 to help independently working filmmakers with the financing, promotion, and distribution of their films. Anyone can join by paying the annual membership fee and by submitting a film or video, to which the person retains all ownership rights and pricing power. Tipitina's Music Office Co-ops

New Orleans Food Co-op

Opening its cooperative store in early 2011, the New Orleans Food Co-op currently operates a public grocery store that is built on a member-ownership model along with several programs that focus on enriching the community and expanding its mission to provide access to healthy food at a fair price, promote local and regional food production, keep capital and jobs in the community, and function as a center of community activity.  As of 2013, 3,300 community members had invested in the co-op, and sales reached over $681,000, an increase of nearly 16 percent from 2012. Wedge Community Co-op

Founded in 1974 by a group of neighbors, Wedge Community Co-op became the first certified organic grocery store in Minnesota in 2002 and now has 16,000 members across the metro area.  In order to meet the demand for organic produce, the co-op created its own wholesale distribution department in 1999 that now serves as a major distributor, bringing perishable products to co-ops in six states, and working with local and regional producers to bring their products to market.  In January 2016, the co-op opened the Wedge Table, a cooperative market, community room and café, featuring organic, local, and homemade products.  Committed to the community and environment, the co-op makes grants to groups working to create a sustainable future and strives to operate as sustainably as possible.

Seward Co-op

Founded in 1972, Seward Co-op is a natural foods cooperative with 14,000 members, 255 employees, and nearly $34 million in total sales. The co-op has two stores in Minneapolis, as well as a café that offers seasonal dishes made from fresh ingredients purchased daily, and strives to operate as sustainably as possible.  Committed to “equitable economics,” the co-op generated 41 percent of its 2015 sales from products supplied by local, small-scale, and/or cooperative farmers and producers.

The Seward Community Café

Collectively owned and operated since 1974, the Seward Community Café is the oldest collectively run business in Minneapolis.  The Café strives to offer products that are independent, local, organic, and sustainable while working to promote a stronger community. The co-op owners are committed to creating a work environment that fosters respect, equality and mutual support between workers, and are guided by principles of social and environmental responsibility.

Riverton Community Housing

Beginning as an initiative to provide University of Minnesota students with affordable housing, Riverton Community Housing focuses on promoting community-oriented and democratically run student housing cooperatives. Riverton now manages six buildings with over 480 units.

Northland Poster Collective -CLOSED

Established in 1979 after a group of eleven artists, meeting in a workshop, discussed using their artwork as a way to support social change, Northland Poster Collective promotes the art of social justice, the tools of grassroots union organizing and labor activism, and the craft of union workers. Mississippi Market Natural Foods Co-op sells local, organic, and affordable food.  Founded in 1979, the co-op now has 3 locations, 268 employees, more than 16,150 members, and $28.7 million in annual sales.  With a mission to create positive change in the community by influencing the production, distribution and enjoyment of food, the co-op offers classes on healthy and sustainable living, sponsors community events, raises funds for area nonprofits, and donates surplus goods to local food pantries.
